Zillertal

Austria

Zillertal climbing area is located in a beautiful alpine valley with tiny mountain rivers, lots of green, remote farms and high peaks around. There are granite blocks of all shapes and sizes scattered all around the valley and these offer loads of sport routes to choose from. Everything you ever dreamed of on granite: technical slabs, cracks, overhangs...Over last couple of years Zillertal has also become a popular destination for summer bouldering and if you feel like multipitch sport climbs Zillertal has a lot to offer too. There’s no mystery behind why the Innsbruck area has become a place where most of Austrian climbing freaks settle down!

Zillertal is an Austrian granite paradise. There are 18 bouldering areas the biggest of which is at Zillerground  and offers 100 boulder problems. Most of the Zillertal boulders are in the forests so if you are looking for open space go to Berliner Hutte which has a more open feel. Do you prefer sport climbing to boulderig? There are around 15 sport crags with single pitches of 10 to 30m length and luckily some of them are cracks! As mentioned above apart from sport crags and boulders Zillertal has got its multipitch climbs too! Do you fancy multipitch climbing too? There are many alpine sport multipitches in Zillertal to choose from and some of them have up to 10 pitches! To sum it up there’s something for everyone in Zillertal, whether it’s granite, cracks, slabs, slopers or even steep crimpy overhangs!

The crag is less than 1 hour drive from Innsbruck and very close to the High National Park, which starts at Ginzling. There are various airports you can fly to (Salzburg, Innsbruck or Munich) none of which are more then 1,5 hour drive  from Zillertal.

There are quite a few campsites in the area such as the one in Mayrohoten an as it’s  a key tourist area other types of accommodation (guesthouses etc.) can be easily arranged. Just find a place you like and enjoy the genuine Tyrolean hospitality.

The best season to come is from Spring to Autumn depending on what you want to focus on. To boulder you will wish for more friction and lower temperatures whereas to do some of the multipitches you will have to wait until they are free from snow.
