Siurana

Spain

Everybody who climbs even a little will have heard of Siurana! It has been one of the most popular Spanish climbing destinations for many years, not only because it is home to La Rambla, one of the most famous 9a+’s in the world.

Situated in the stunning Sierra de Prades mountains, it is less than an hour from other very important areas such as Margalef, Montsant, La Mussara  and Arboli.

Siurana is a magical place with great scenery. The crags are situated inbetween the tiny picturesque hamlet of Siurana and its larger neighbour,  a village called Cornudella de Montsant. There are approximately 30 sectors and over 1200 routes, most of them of superb quality with new routes still being opened up all the time.

Siurana is a great destination for mid to hard "7's" but grades range from 5s to 9's which makes it a good destination for groups of different climbing levels.  A typical Siurana route would be about 30 meters of technical fingery climbing on orange limestone with amazing views over the beautiful valley.

Thanks to its location, Cornudella has recently become a 'climbing village' as many Spanish, Catalan and foreign climbers  have started to settle down here. The bakery makes a convenient focal point and place to hang out whilst you decide on the day’s tick list. There is also a good climbing shop in the village. Cornudella has quite a good bus connection to the nearest big city, Reus. By car it takes only half an hour to get to Reus and about 2 hours to get to Barcelona. Both Barcelona and Reus have airports.

The best time to visit Sierra de Prades is from Spring to Autumn. In the Winter it might rain or snow and at these times the proximity of other areas  such as Margalef can offer a useful alternative. During late  Spring to early  Autumn it can get too hot for climbing on small ledges and crimps in the sun but you can always find some sectors in the shade to climb.

In Siurana there are various apartments for rent as well as rooms in the refuge in the town centre. If you prefer a lower-budget option, there is a campsite run by climbers very close to Siurana village. There are other campsites and refuges in Sierra de Prades at Uldemolins, Margalef, La Mussara as well.

To make the most of your trip a car is useful for getting to and from Cornudella although most crags are within walking distance from the Siuranna campsite.
