Montgrony

Montgrony is one of the old Spanish crags situated in the central Pyrenees close to a little village called Gombren. Although Montgrony is not that famous abroad it is worth visiting! Climbing there is not as ‘rewarding’ as in some other areas such as Rodellar or Terradets. Similarly it is tufa climbing but the routes are mostly shorter, more bouldery and explosive, in other words a little less ‘comfortable’ to climb. But don’t hesitate to come! It is great tufa climbing on a superb rock away from the crowds and in beautiful scenery. 

Montgrony is not a big area, all in all there are about 300 routes, most of which are the 7th and the 8th grade. As mentioned above it is mainly tufa climbing on big jugs but bouldery and very physical so get your power endurance ready!

The best time to come is from Autumn to Spring as most of the walls are south facing. Despite its altitude, Montgrony gets quite hot the sun even on winter days but when the sun goes down you will need your down jackets!

Mongrony is one hour from Girona, close to Gombren, so the ideal way to get there is to take a plane to Girona, which is operated mainly by low-cost airlines, and then to hire a car. There is a little refuge close to the crags but it is still a drive away. Climbing in Montgrony you will definitely need a car or better still, a camper, which would be the best option as there is a pretty car park literally next to the crags.
