Gorges du Verdon

Verdon is one of the best European crag which offers a wide range of climbing styles in a really unique place. Climbing there is a special experience not only for the superb quality limestone but also for the breathtaking scenery. The crags spread on both sides of the river Verdon as it carves its way through the 100's metres high gorge.

There are more than 1000 routes of all grades and styles, from short friendly sport climbs to impressive big wall routes both bolted and traditional protection. The gorge is huge and therefore usually divided in 3 parts: Upstream Gorge, Central Gorge and Downstream Gorge. Majority of the climbs are challenging vertical walls with perfect holds and cracks but you may find top quality tufa climbs too.

Verdon offers endless rock of an incredible quality and stunning views but it is not for free.

Climbing there requires a lot of commitment. Its specialty is that to most of the routes you have to abseil down, pull the ropes and climb out. Those of you who like exposure will fall in love with Verdon immediately. Verdon is a quiet crag where you can experience real authentic moments climbing with no one around.

The majority of the climbs are easily accessed from car parks along the road (max 20 minutes walk). Some of the routes start at the bottom of the canyon and for those, you have to hike through a system of tunnels which is an adventure in itself. The best season to go is from late spring through autumn, though watch out for afternoon thunderstorms, which are not uncommon in August and September. In the winter it gets cold and wet.

There is a good campsite in the nearby village called La Palud-sur- Verdon.

The crag is located about 2 hours from Cannes or Marseille and easy to reach by car.
