George de la Jonte

We decided to add to the list of Rockbusters' destinations another top quality French crag, Gorge de la Jonte with more than 300 superb routes reaching about 150m in height. Surprisingly, La Jonte isn't well known by foreign climbers although it is just around the corner from the popular climbing site called Gorges du Tarn (the region of Millau).

Gorge de la Jonte has a long climbing history. Many of its climbs were open before the era of bolting and nowadays there still remains many routes traditionally-protected. It is a great site for climbers who like exposure and more adventurous climbing. Count on with an old style french grading, though. Many grades will probably feel tough in comparison to nearby Tarn or other European crags so especially when choosing your first multipitch routes be careful. La Jonte offers quite a variety of single and multipitch routes, both bolted and traditional. The rock is solid limestone with pockets, slopers and holes and the terrain is mostly vertical or steep. To sum it up, the gorge has loads of great climbs in a magnificent setting and is definitely worth visiting.

Majority of the climbs face south and get a lot of sun, therefore the best season is from autumn through late spring. However, the routes following corners get sun or shade depending on the time of the day and higher up on long climbs you usually get cold breeze which makes it possible to climb them even on hot days.
